About J.W. Stieneker

My maternal grandfather J. W. Stieneker was a photographer who lived from 1902 to 1967. He photographed people and streets in Amsterdam from the 1930s to the 1960s and won lots of prizes with his work. I created this website to showcase the photographic work of my grandfather. In 2015 I started sorting and restoring the huge collection of black and white negatives he has left as a legacy. The photographs shown on this website are only a small part of the collection.

Under the button "photographs" you can pick one of four categories from the dropdown menu;
- Amsterdam
In those days Amsterdam was smaller, there was still more countryside at the outskirts. A view into the everyday life, the streets, the markets etc.
- Boats
My grandfather was a sailing enthousiast, much of the photographs were taken to document the boats he encountered on his sailing outings, not as an artistic endeavour. These photographs provide an archive for those of you interested in old(ish) boats.
- Landscapes
This category holds photographs from different regions of the Netherlands, but also photographs taken during trips abroad.
- Miscellaneous
Everything else.
